At present messaging is either on or off. I propose a '3rd way' whereby students can send and receive messages to/from teachers but can't send messages to each other. We tried, as I'm sure many schools have, to moderate the messaging but it's impossible as they just use them to IM each other when they should be working.
This suggestion could be further expanded to include allowing/disallowing messaging down to individuals and/or class groups so that it could be turned on for specific tasks.
Teachers have limited admin rights in that they can't reset student passwords

At present, only an administrator can reset students passwords. What would be good is if teachers could gain this permission, and only this permission so that they can reset the passwords of students in their classes. This would take away a huge burden from the system admin. I know that there is a reset password procedure but not all students, and in particularly the early year ones, have e-mail addresses
It might be useful if the system administrator could choose which, out of all the admin functions could be passed down to other members of staff. You may want to not have this functionality for core items that would cause chaos.
Add tags to files so that they are searchable

On new web sites/document management systems you have the ability to add tags to all content so that it is easily searchable.
An example would be 'Joints in woodwork'. If you did a boolean search for 'joints' and 'woodwork' you would get a list of resources on the VLE that have these tags. This greatly aids searching across differnet departments for resources related to a specific topic.
Another example is this website - everything is tagged - why haven't we got this facility on the VLE?
