The tool that teachers use to edit submitted essays, exams etc. only accepts .doc-files. It would help progress in the digital world if this editor also accepted file formats such as ODF and OOXML. Because these formats are open, you wouldn't have to pay licensing fees to the owners of the proprietary format.
