Ability to download all files in a location as i.g. a zip file

Posted by Stian Blindheim on May 20, 2009 06:07 AM PDT in Itslearning ideas portal | Active

One thing I really miss from ClassFronter at UiB, is the ability to download all files in one location as a zip archive. On It'sLearning, we have to download one file at a time, which can be quite time consuming if there are many files in one location.

For example, here at HiST Fysioterapi, we have a large collection of articles in one of our courses (20 or so articles). All these articles are in PDF, and I want to download them so that I can view them offline on my mac. To do this, I will have to first hit the name of the article, and then the "download "filename.pdf". That will be 40 clikcs and a lot of work just to download them, when I instead could have hit a "download folder contents as zip archive" button and had them all instantly in my download location

For whom do we solve a problem :

Important point! A button to download everything I have done the last week, month, year as a zip file is also something I miss. This should include all documents and all forum posts I have made in all courses.

You can export stuff from a project using the "Export (IMS)" feature. Go to a folder in a project, choose some files, choose Export (IMS) and press OK. The files are reorganized in a weird way though. But it works mostly.

Maybe what you are looking for is actually the possibility for offline viewing? Quite a number of web based applications are using for example Google Gears to provide the same functionality when offline - synchronizing whenever you get back online again...

Dick: Yes you can do this (in some strange way) inside Projects, but not in the folders in Courses, which is where I usually would love to be able to download the many files..

I'd like to see this feature added as well. Many of our students are asking for a way to easily download course content for future reference since they lose their accounts when they graduate. A simple "click to download zip" including files and folder structure (optional) is in high demand. For reference, look at the feature already implemented for teachers using assignments. There you're able to download all (or selected) hand-ins as a zip.

There are several reasons why I find this particular feature very important: 1) It is extremely cumbersome and takes unnecessarily amounts of time to download the many articles, earlier exams etc (from the different courses-folders) that we need on a daily basis, and would be practical to have on disk. 2) These days (end of school) many students lose their access to It's Learning, meaning they also lose years of digital learning material, unless they spend hours clicking on each and every file in order to download it to their computers. This should be possible to do with a single click! I hope this will be handled as soon as poosible.

Is it so that the Export (IMS) feature exist also in Courses, it is just that it is not accessible/visible for students? Do any of you who are not students the ability to export the content in a folder in Courses?

If this already works for teachers, I guess that could explain why it is not understood as a problem :/

I hope It's learning look into this case soon, and give students as well the possibility to export/download content in Courses in Its learning!

I know this issue (function for one-click-download of all course-material) has been forwarded for a long time.

I personaly forwarded this request in 2008 or so, to the student-council at my school, which already had discussed this case with the school-administration and its learning. Many of my fellow students have wanted this solution, especially because of the need to make a personal archive of all course-material from ones education.

My impresion is that this has been a high-demand for some years now.

Its learning-developers!: Could you please give an update on how you state this issue, and how development is going? Thank you.

I work at BI Norwegian Business school and we got this request from a student. Alot of the teachers add alot of files, it is very time consuming to download each file seperatly.
