    Itslearning.com iPhone Application

Posted by Adrian Sæther-larsen on May 25, 2009 10:40 AM PDT in It's learning ideas portal | Active

iPhone is expanding widely, and with the amount of iPhone users just in Norway, it's safe to say that an Itslearning application would increase usabilty and visiting numbers. As I am a student myself, I would increase my visiting to my schools profile to catch up with the latest news available. Not just referring to general news about the school itself, but to see subjects and read information from there would be most likely a huge hit.

By going directly to itslearning.com with Safari on iPhone, the site is not functional at all and the Java experience itself is to heavy and the resolution used on the site is not watchable at all on the phone.

Several teachers on my school has an iPhone themself, and when I told them my idea they were excited and they saw that this is a potential to reach out to more students and teachers.

The SDK provided with the iPhone OS is easy if you set your mind to it, and a ITL portal on iPhone would not take that many hours. Services provided with the application could be:

     - Read news
     - Read subjects and see paper dues
     - Calendar
     - Messages

Doing task and delivering papers is a whole other case, and not needed, but when Gilde (Norwegian meat processing company) can make an application to give out recipies, ITL could make a portal for simple viewing.

A wish a good amount of people would like to see come to life.

I second this, but wouldn't it be possible to use both Apple APIs and it's learning APIs (developer.itslearning.com) and create an standalone app? Or is this only wishful thinking?

Interesting. I haven't looked at the ITL Api, but it might be possible.
Apple usually runs pretty tight, but if it's possible, that would be great I guess :)

An excellent suggestion. Not just for iPhone, though, how about Apps for other popular platforms, eg Blackberry, Symbian, Palm?

Good idea, but for me iCal would be ok too, then you at least get the appointments right to your calender, and that's not only for iPhone.. - I think..

    Great idea!

As a teacher I would especially appreciate if abscense was included in an iPhone app, removing the need for bringing a computer (or the old fashioned pen and paper) to the classroom.

Any development of hand held learning devices is worthwhile, this is a fast growing area in the UK and beyond. The i-Touch and i-Phone have a growing number of education applications in the Apple Store, some are free. Schools attitudes to the use of mobile devices is changing from banning to enlightenment. It would be really good to see an IL app available for users soon.

An example of development work on the use of i-phone apps in education is the Educmecca project at Trondheim University led by John Stav. This is a student response project, otherwise known as voting. It takes away the need to have separate voting devices and tap into the technology that increasingly students and teachers already have in their pocket.

Although this project is about developing life long learning skills for a vocational course (in this case for welders) you can see how the mechanism of student response using an i-Phone / i-Touch could be applied to any area of learning. Imagine if the responses could be embedded inside It's Learning as part of a course? If you want to see more details about the Edumecca project go to:

    Tutorial Point

See my idea on an iPhone website, which can be convertable into an app.

It would be nice! But it's not very important like an ical plugin is.
